Lisa Rinna’s Lip Surgery Didn’t Make Harry Hamlin Smile at First

Lisa Rinna’s mouth has attracted plenty of attention over the years – not all of it flattering. But one person who had no issue with her famously puffy pout? Her husband, Harry Hamlin.

What got me about Lisa was her eyes, not her lips,” says Hamlin, who married Rinna in 1997. “So I spent most of my time looking at those.”

Hamlin says he didn’t notice as, over the years, Rinna’s top lip became swollen and bumpy – the result of scar tissue that formed around silicone injected into the lip when she was 25.

Whatever change took place was so gradual, it never registered for me,” says Hamlin, adding that when kissing his wife, her mouth always “felt soft and supple.”

As a result, Hamlin, 58, was initially resistant when Rinna, 47, told him she was considering lip-reduction surgery.

How To Find The Best Rhinoplasty Surgeon?

When choosing between the many rhinoplasty surgeons, great care should be given to researching and finding the best possible doctor. It is imperative to opt for a doctor who is a veteran in performing facial plastic surgery and is well known for attaining to the patients’ needs. In cases where the patient’s situation is complex (for example in the case of secondary or revision rhinoplasty) a very experienced doctor can assist in assessing and correcting the situation better than other plastic surgeons, especially if they don’t perform rhinoplasty surgeries very often.

Revision Rhinoplasty

Revision RhinoplastyRhinoplasty is among the most difficult of all plastic surgery operations and as a result there is a large need for secondary surgeries. Whether the irregularity is a small imperfection or a major deformity the chances are that something can be done to improve it. Even if the problem is that your nose looks like it has been “done” it is possible to make it look more natural with more surgery (sounds a bit paradoxical doesn’t it?)

Revision rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to repair both form and function of a nose that has previously been operated on.

The Rhinoplasty Surgery

Rhinoplasty operationRhinoplasty is one of the most common procedures plastic surgeons perform and also one of the most difficult as the surgeon performs it mainly by feel. Rhinoplasty may be performed in order to increase the patient’s ability to breath, improve the nose by reducing or reshaping it and/or, straightening an injured nose.

The Rhinoplasty Surgery:

  • Anesthesia: General or Sedation
  • Location: Hospital, surgical center or office
  • Surgery time: 1-4 hours

Techniques:

There are two main options for the incisions that your plastic surgeon can use: closed rhinoplasty and open rhinoplasty.

Closed rhinoplasty involves incision confined to the inside of your nose. Swelling improves soon and recovery is fast. However, your surgeon may have a limited ability to achieve some changes in your nose because of her or his inability to see parts of the inside of the nose.

Open rhinoplasty involves a small incision across the columella, between the nostrils, in addition to incisions on the inside of your nose. Open surgery is usually preferred in more complicated cases.

Some surgeons prefer the open rhinoplasty because it allows them greater visibility of the nose. Swelling and bruising lasts longer with open rhinoplasty. Either way, if you sleep with your head elevated for the week following your nose surgery, the swelling will be minimized and will subside much faster. When deciding on open vs. closed rhinoplasty, you should follow the advice of your plastic surgeon.

Top surgeons:

The most important step in preparing for plastic surgery is choosing your doctor. Choose only surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. In Canada, surgeons are certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Recovery After Rhinoplasty

Immediately after a Rhinoplasty surgery, patients may experience some discomfort, bruising, and swelling. Splints are applied to keep the cartilage and bone anchored during healing, and gauze is packed inside the nose to keep bleeding at a minimum and keep the septum from moving.

Splints are removed 1-2 weeks post surgery, which usually relieves quite a bit of discomfort. Swelling can last up to 1 year post surgery while the cartilage, skin, and bone heal completely. You may have some bruising around the eyes for the first 1-2 weeks, although the majority of the swelling usually goes away 4-6 months post surgery. Taking certain supplements and using compresses can minimize discomfort and swelling as well, and keeping your head elevated. Talk with your surgeon as they will usually have detailed post op requirements for you to follow.

Cosmetic appearance of the nose is always a concern in aesthetic rhinoplasty. Most gross swelling (the swelling that looks like the patient has been punched in the nose) recedes in a week or so. In addition, during this first post-operative week, an external splint or tape commonly protects the nose. These protective dressings are, of course, obtrusive by their mere presence. Although they don’t interfere with most activities, they can be embarrassing.

Non Surgical Nose Jobs

Non surgical nose jobs are done through fillers. Fillers can be an option for a non surgical nose job and can be less expensive. The results though are temporary. It can be used to fill in volume to augment and make things bigger. But fillers have a harder time to make things smaller especially the tip area. A nose hump can be made to look smaller through filling above and below the hump. Again the results are temporary. Through my experience, I have noticed that rarely fillers can last for years. The cause of this is through scar tissue surrounding the filler protecting it from getting dissolved by the body. Most permanent changes are effected through some surgical type of procedure. Permanent fillers (artefill, radiesse, silicone injections) are an option but inferior to surgical means and can have significant complications.

Non-surgical rhinoplasty (the use of fillers) is really only for select cases where dents, depressions and asymmetries can be filled in. But for those select patients, it’s a pretty amazing thing to be able to enhance their appearance with so little downtime, cost, and complexity.

Best Rhinoplasty Surgeon

Deciding to have a surgery is never easy and it shouldn’t be easy at all! This is not a decision that should be made over night, especially with procedures that will influence directly on your physical appearance. You probably have thought this thing through many times or you are currently in the process of deliberating whether to go for surgery or not.

Let us start with the basics. It is very important to know what plastic surgery is. The term “plastic” in Plastic Surgery has got nothing to do with the synthetic polymer “plastic”, besides it had derived from the Greek word ‘plastikos’ that simply meant ‘to mould’. Further the process can be defined as a medical forte related with the modification of outward appearance and purpose.

Everyone who decides to have something done in the area of rhinoplasty surgery goes through the same process of questioning themselves whether the surgeon is one of the best rhinoplasty surgeons, whether the procedure will go smoothly, will there be any complications, how long the recovery is going to last and many other very common and normal question. It is simply smart to be careful about this. After all, you are putting your body in the hands of the man who is going to operate on you. That is why you need to make sure that the specialist you opted for is the best rhinoplasty surgeon you could possibly find.

Swelling After Rhinoplasty

Swelling after rhinoplasty is normal and expected. Due to the thicker skin around the nasal tip the swelling lasts for up to one year after surgery.

This tries the patience of the patient and surgeon alike, but there is no way around it. The results are worth it for motivated patients who understand the healing process

Rhinoplasty can take weeks to up to a month or so for the swelliing to go down. Sometimes using steroids can help this swelling along. But you should be aware of the risks of steroids and thoroughly discuss this with your doctor. Also, you should be aware that very subtle changes can actually take up to two years to really be noticeable. These subtleties most commonly take place at the nasal tip.

Avoid heat, as this can only make things worse by increasing the blood flow to the area, causing more inflammation and extending the inflammatory process. Keeping your head elevated will help the swelling go down. Also considering very light exercise can also help the swelling by increasing your circulation. I usually suggest 15-20 minute walks 2-3 times a day to help the swelling. With guidance, judicious use of pressure can help relieve the swelling but you should definitely talk with your doctor about this.
